Some Executive Directors have a very vivid vision, grounded in their Imagination, but lack the ability to Inspire others. Their staff, prospective donors, volunteers, & Board Members. Some Executive Directors can Inspire others extremely well, but their ability to Imagine clearly is subpar.
Ideally an ED has the ability to both Imagine and Inspire. Their creativity, vision skills, and the ability to lead others allows them to be a highly-effective Leader. Lacking both you’re likely just a manager.
